Display on Boom Lift

CASE STUDY SPOTLIGHT:  HED Display Reaches New Heights at JLG

Industry leader in Aerial Work Platforms (AWP) utilizes HED’s CL-707 4.3” color display as operator information center in their newest, tallest boom lift.

JLG logoHED was approached by JLG Industries., the world's leading designer, manufacturer and marketer of access equipment, to support a requirement for a display solution that would be easily readable in extremely bright sunlight conditions.  JLG also required a solution that would provide additional protection for situations where a wrench or paint may be dropped onto the display.

The Application:

JLG 150HAXJLG Industries has released the world’s largest self-propelled articulating boom lift – the 150HAX, which will reach a platform height of 150 feet (45.72 meters). This boom lift has the longest outreach in the industry at 79 feet 3 inches (24.16 meters). Extendable axles provide stability without excessive counterweight to enable travel from the fully elevated position, along with four wheel steer/crab steer provides a tight turning radius and more precise positioning. JLG wanted to provide the operator with critical stability data for the lift via an easily readable, robust display

Project Challenge:

  1. Ability to provide a readable display in extremely bright sunlight conditions.
  2. Ability to protect the display against objects dropping on to it, along with robust sealing to protect against being exposed to the elements
  3. An inexpensive, replaceable protective covering over the display
  4. High resolution LCD to display precision graphics

The Solution:

After discussing the requirements in detail, HED selected the CL-707, 4.3” color display as the ideal product for this application.  The CL-707’s high resolution (480x272 pixels) allows detailed graphics to be displayed. In addition, the display utilizes an extremely bright backlight (500 cd/m2 or nits) making the display easy to read under the brightest conditions. To meet the challenge of the drop requirement, HED designed a clear polycarbonate thermoplastic protective guard over the LCD. The hinged guard can be lifted for cleaning or quickly replaced if damaged. This CAN-based display can be easily reprogrammed over CAN or USB.

Success:

HED 4.3"DisplayJLG is now able to provide the operators of their newest and largest boom lift with critical stability data. The operators are able to read this information in any brightness condition and easily replace the protective LCD guard if damaged without having to replace the entire display.
