CASE STUDY SPOTLIGHT: Increase Fuel Efficiency Across a Variety of Vehicle Models
One of HED's key customers in the Refuse market was presented with a challenge from one of their customers, a national waste management provider. The challenge was to engineer a solution that improved fuel efficiency in one of their Class 8 heavy duty vehicles.
- Generate measurable, meaningful fuel savings per vehicle.
- Flexible (same module used on multiple applications, can be used on any age of truck)
HED's customer engineered an innovative solution using an electronic unloader on the vehicle hydraulics.
This enables the vehicle control system to disable the hydraulic controls when flow is not needed by means of electrical power. This solution is more fuel efficient than the continuous work being done by pressing against a spring in the mechanical unloader valve. The electronics also facilitated access to engine RPM data through J1939 from the vehicle ECU to provide better overspeed control.
After identifying key customer requirements for this project, including number of inputs and outputs and current levels, HED sales team selected the CL-423 as the optimal product for this application. Armed with the right controller, HED's customer was able to use HED's ComposerTM application programming tool to add the necessary control functionality to their existing ComposerTMcode for a fully integrated solution, optimizing system performance.
This product offering needed to be easily crossed between many product lines to gain the most benefit with the least amount of effort. The ease of programming and the diversity of the HED products made selection and implementation fast. This same module is used in other locations on the vehicle in different facets for this customer, thus optimizing costs and simplifying procurement and stocking efforts. This simple project was able to save the end customer up to 4 gallons of diesel fuel per day, just by adding intelligent controls to a mechanically driven system
