“Working with HED was a great experience for the team from XALT. HED hosted a training session that allowed us to cover a significant amount of features and programming in their Orchestra software suite. They were subject matter experts and had answers to tough, niche questions pertaining to our application. They also provided a great platform for later development where their application engineers respond quickly to specific questions via email or phone. I was able to catch up with Ethan Klein, Battery System Engineer of XALT Energy for a short Q&A regarding a project the company is working on with HED to integrate a battery management system utilizing a service tool to charge and discharge battery packs. “We were in need of a robust solution with a microcontroller and display - one that has both options. When battery packs need servicing, we must remove them from the system and charge or discharge them to a specified state of charge, so we were looking for a robust solution to fit our needs. To go along with it, we are using the HED CL-711 Display.”
What application is the battery management system for?
Our biggest market is transportation, specifically on transit buses, however our systems are found globally throughout diverse applications including consumer and commercial hybrid marine shipping vessels.
Can you elaborate on the problem you were trying to solve by developing this system?
When a battery pack is shipped, federal regulation requires that it transport at a low energy level to accommodate safety requirements. This means that a customer must charge the pack to the desired voltage upon receiving their equipment. This tool will solve that need as well as provide the ability to service the pack in an instance where it must be removed from an existing system.
Can you explain what causes the battery packs to power down?
Our battery packs rarely experience issues, but if service must be completed on a pack it may be necessary to charge or discharge it. Additionally, if a customer wishes to ship the pack or complete additional testing, specified voltage levels may need to be met.
What is your expected outcome or result by implementing the HED system?
We expect the display to provide a simple and clean interface for our customers and service technicians to complete necessary pack maintenance. Due to the robust design of HED’s display, we anticipate a long service life and ease of adjustment to be high value features of this tool.
